Meet Your Coach
Hi, I’m Katy. After earning a B.S. in human development from U.C. Davis, I graduated from the SF SPCA's Academy for Dog Trainers (known as the Harvard of dog training programs) in 2005 and continued on as an intern in the SFSPCA’s behavior and training department. I cut my teeth as a handler and eventually behavior and training manager at Citizen Canine, an east bay dog daycare, for over 8 years where over the years I was directly involved in the care of hundreds of dogs as well as in the training of new staff. I have taught group training classes since 2007 and seen private clients full time since 2014.
How I Train
I use scientifically proven, positive reinforcement methods. Per the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, rewards-based training “provides the most advantage and least harm to the learner’s welfare” and should be employed for anything from basic manners to behavior problems. I always want learning to feel safe and fun for my students and will never suggest the use of pain, force or discomfort to effect behavior change.
